Meet my new neighbours!! These beautiful Rosellas have been feasting on the hawthorn berries surrounding my verandah. My cockatiels feel they have to answer the wild rosella's calls and have screeched for all of the last 2 days! I'm hoping the bird chorus will end before the berries do!!!

This is a recent gift that perfectly reflects my new surroundings- living in the woods! It is a hand turned Tasmanian Huon pine-huge sugar bowl- for the sweet tooth of the 1970's- and now me!! My entry in this year's scarf festival- Red/orange/pink bubble scarf. It was very tricky to take a non- blurry photo as all the scarves were constntly spinning around on bent LP records. A very noisy flock of about 100 of these wild corellas spent the day in my back garden feasting on the neighbour's almonds and my unripe apples and then throwing them on to the ground. It was really spectacular, and my neighbour's attempts at looking scary and making noises to save his nuts were almost as entertaining as the antics of the birds!!

After 2 days of 40 degrees, my plans to finish hand knitting this twisted spiral scarf failed. It really is too hot to knit! I am hoping a weekend cool change will be enough inspiration to finish the last few spirals as it has been on the needles since last winter!.

I have been practicing my hand knitting with some of Lesley Stanfield's knitted flowers. As a hand knitting beginner, the 'basic' patterns were easy to follow, I even managed the scary bits of the pattern like ssk and ssk2tpo!! and after much practice I can also do a french knot! My new year's resolution is to learn how to crochet so I can try some of the beautiful crochet flowers.

I have been rediscovering the pom pom, For the classic round pom pom, I found the technique I learnt in primary school still works the best- two circles of card, or similar, with a hole in the middle- my experiments with commercially available 'pom pom makers' made shaggy or slightly rectangular pom poms. The variegated lemon tree might even have some fruit this year! the borage has finally taken off- which means plenty of garnish for Pimms and lemonade, and the view through my (very dirty) studio window is a wall of roses at the moment. This is my latest work in the bubble wrap range of scarves. They are all 100% wool and have a very handy loop at one end so you can wrap up securely to avoid those icy winds.

Scarf Festival 2010 entry number 2- In this piece, bubbles that normally form the surface design of the scarf are now reflected on the reverse of the scarf, revealing the equally intriguing surface of the felted wool. There is a pleasing contrast between the reverse knit stitch of the reflected bubbles and the stocking stitch of the primary bubbles.

Next step - hand felting. This involves a bucket of very hot water, a bucket of very cold water, some liquid soap, strong rubber gloves and, you guessed it, lots and lots of hand rubbing!
